ATLAS launch in the news
Radio Television Canarias (RTVC) News broadcast
“Cetaceans spotted in the Canary Islands will now not only be seen, but also heard and studied in depth thanks to what you are seeing here.
Submarine fibre-optic cables deployed across our territory will be used by scientists from different parts of the world as acoustic sensors to map underwater noise, seismic phenomena, bioacoustic signals, and to track cetaceans.
This is the ATLAS project, a highly ambitious initiative in our region, driven by the enormous amount of information that our ocean depths provide day after day. In essence, it means using an existing piece of infrastructure, originally designed for one purpose, for another that was initially secondary, but which may become a primary one.
The project has been underway since early October and aims to turn these submarine cables into ears that help protect the Atlantic Ocean.”
